“The Heart of the Matter”: Addressing College Composition Problems of Practice in a Research Practice Partnership

A research-practice partnership (RPP) made up of college composition instructors and researchers came together to address a problem of practice facing writing teachersengaging students in exigent rhetorical situations and real audiences.In this paper we use case study methods to describe the ways that RPP members collaborated in a professional learning community to address this problem in college composition by adopting human-centered design as a pedagogical tool.Through thematic coding, we noted the different moves participants made and how those moves productively guided practitioners in tackling and designing instructional experiences that responded to the problem of practice.We also note the ways in which these moves also aligned with another RPP goal -fostering mutually beneficial relationships.These findings suggest that professional learning communities, especially those within an RPP, provide an effective frame for addressing problems of practice in mutually beneficial ways.
