Electrochemical Detection of Biofilms
Le résumé fourni par la source
Microbial biofilms present significant challenges in the health, medical, and food processing industries due to their resistance to antibiotics and their strong adherence to substrate surfaces. These challenges directed researchers to develop novel methods for effective detection of biofilm formation. Electrochemical sensors offer enhanced response signals, improved selectivity for specific analytes, and increased stability. Achieving stable and effective transduction between microbes and the sensor, particularly at the electrode surface, has been a significant challenge. In recent years, surface modification techniques and the incorporation of specific biorecognition elements have been explored to develop more sensitive and reliable electrochemical sensors. Impedimetric biosensors, known for their high specificity, sensitivity, robustness, cost-effectiveness, and stability, have shown enormous potential in the sensing and characterization of microbial biofilms. These sensors enable label-free, real-time monitoring of microbial biofilm growth on various surfaces, making them valuable tools for clinical diagnostics in healthcare and bioprocess monitoring. However, certain limitations must be addressed before these sensors can be applied on a large scale. This book chapter introduces the specific attributes of microbial biofilms and their electrochemical detection using biosensors. It also summarizes the development of electrochemical sensors, their sensing mechanisms, and surface modifications for successful biofilm monitoring. Finally, it discusses current challenges and future perspectives in this field.
