Exploration of the Experience of Operating School Sports Club Competitions Applied with Process-Oriented Assessment

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of operating school sports club competitions applying process-oriented assessment in educational settings, and to elucidate their significance in order to provide practical knowledge to teachers in the field. Methods: This study employed autoethnography to focus on the collection and analysis of personal internal data regarding school sports club competitions that apply process-oriented assessment. In this process, methods such as self-recollection, self-reflection, self-observation, participant observation, the preparation of research journals, and the analysis of relevant documents were conducted. The data collected as a result underwent a transcription process and was subjected to thematic analysis, one of the methodologies of autoethnographic analysis. Results: The results of this study are as follows: First, the experiences of operating school sports club competitions applying process-oriented assessment were categorized into three themes: “Reflection,” “Challenge,” and “Resilience.” Second, the operation of school sports club competitions utilizing process-oriented assessment was realized through the introduction of “Improvement Assessment” in the psychomotor domain, “Portfolio Assessment” in the cognitive domain, and “Sportsmanship Assessment” in the affective domain. Third, the meanings of the changes revealed through the operation of school sports club competitions with process-oriented assessment were reflected in creating an environment for “inclusive participation without student exclusion,” achieving the original goals of the competitions through “holistic education,” and “growth through collaborative learning.” Conclusion: This study identified the issues occurring in actual educational settings and focused on students who do not benefit from the positive effects of school sports club competitions, proposing concrete operational strategies to expand the target beneficiaries. Additionally, it aimed to align with the assessment method of process-oriented evaluation within the school curriculum. These efforts were intended to enable students to experience holistic development and to contribute to establishing a clearer direction for assessments. Ultimately, it is anticipated that this study will provide foundational materials for reconsidering the operation strategies of school sports club competitions and for creating a more inclusive environment, thereby bringing about substantial changes to the educational field.
