Abstract The growing demand for copper across industries emphasizes the need for effective recovery and recycling methods, particularly from secondary sources like brass scrap. This study employs Tafel analysis to investigate the electrochemical behavior of copper and brass in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show that brass has a corrosion potential (Ecorr) of -211.9 mV and a corrosion current density (Icorr) of 1.69 mA, whereas copper has a corrosion potential of -216.5 mV and a corrosion current density of 3.87 mA, highlighting that copper corrodes at a higher rate than brass. Moreover, copper exhibited a corrosion rate of 1.1 g/m2.d, significantly higher than brass’s 0.48 g/m2.d. Chloride ions destabilize brass’s protective oxide layer, accelerating its dissolution. The study provides valuable insights into the distinct corrosion mechanisms of copper and brass, which are crucial for developing optimized recovery techniques and sustainable practices in metal recycling.
