ABSTRACT Major steel producers in the US have started tracking and reporting Scope 3 CO2 emissions, which are impacted by their refractory CO2 footprint. Typical gunning refractory solutions for steelmaking vessel repairs are a high-volume consumable material that typically has a high CO2 footprint, increasing Scope 3 CO2 emissions of steel mills. One avenue of reducing CO2 footprint in magnesia-based gunning mixes is by using Circular Raw Materials with lower CO2-footprint as a main raw material consumption. To address this need, a new gunnable refractory was designed to achieve the same performance properties of typical products, while having a CO2 footprint that is 50% lower than typical values.
