Laser ion acceleration at PW-class laser facilities and beyond
Résumé fourni par la source
Laser-matter interactions at relativistic intensities are at the forefront of plasma physics research nowadays. This is in part driven by the fast progress in laser technology, which enabled the design, construction, and operation of multi-PW laser facilities. Laser ion acceleration is considered one of the main directions of scientific research at these multi-PW laser facilities due to numerous potential applications of energetic ion sources in fundamental physics, material science, medicine and biology, and national security. In this presentation a short review of different regimes of laser ion acceleration will be given along with recent developments in the field. Particular attention will be given to the laser ion acceleration from near critical density targets due to a number of unique properties of generated ion beams and fundamental physics effects enabling this acceleration. As an example of potential application of laser ion acceleration, the interaction of a multi-10 PW laser pulse with a near critical density plasma is proposed to be characterized by employing two plasma targets each irradiated by a multi-10 PW laser pulse.
