Physiotherapy for Osteoarthritis Following Orthobiological Injections – a Narrative Review of Recent Literature

The integration of orthobiologic injection modalitieswith structured physiotherapy regimens hasemerged as a promising avenue for optimizing recoverytrajectories in patients affected by osteoarthritis(OA). While these interventions demonstratetherapeutic potential, the existing research exhibitssubstantial variability in patient demographics, injectionmethodologies, study duration, and outcomeassessment. Furthermore, despite the recognizedimportance of post-injection rehabilitation, comprehensivedocumentation of physiotherapy protocolsremains scarce, precluding a definitive understandingof their complementary effects with orthobiologictreatments.This study evaluates and synthesizes the currentevidence on the therapeutic efficacy of orthobiologicinjections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and othercell-based regenerative therapies when implementedalongside physiotherapeutic interventions in patientswith knee OA. The absence of standardized post-injectionphysiotherapy protocols, coupled with inconsistentmethodological frameworks, impedes the formulationof evidence-based rehabilitation guidelines.Accordingly, future research must prioritize longitudinal,well-controlled investigations that delineate theoptimal integration of physiotherapy with orthobiologictherapies to maximize functional restoration andlong-term symptom management in OA.A structured literature search was conducted viaPubMed, utilising a strategic combination of MedicalSubject Headings (MeSH) and targeted keywords to ensure thorough retrieval of relevant studies. A totalof sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria, allof which reported favourable outcomes followingorthobiologic injections. Interestingly, only one trialincorporated a general physiotherapy program, thusemphasizing the noticeable gap in literature regardingthe integration of orthobiologic injections withstandard rehabilitative strategies.
