Algal Biomass: Potential Feedstock for Value-Added Molecules
Le résumé fourni par la source
Algae are eukaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms that use solar energy, nutrients, and carbon dioxide to produce proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and other valuable organic compounds. The chemical compounds synthesized by microalgae have several applications. Algal biomass is a rich source for sustainable production of a range of value-added compounds. The improved new technology for the culture of such photosynthetic organisms and added knowledge on their biochemical composition has focused on the field of high-value biomolecules. Microalgae including cyanobacteria have been recognized as an excellent source of fine chemicals. In addition, microalgae can be manipulated for specific secondary metabolites by the addition of an organic carbon source or changing light intensity. They are rich in nutritional profile for their novel bioactive compounds such as β-carotene, astaxanthin, lutein, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, DHA, ω-3 and ω-6-fatty acids, γ-linolenic acid, vitamins, ESA, and essential amino acids. An integrated approach such as improvement of strain, biomass production, and optimum extraction 2 techniques by using small bio-refinery technology is required for the efficient production of high-value compounds for commercial applications.
