SEXUAL MEDICINE CURRICULUM IN THE UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA FACULTY OF MEDICINE

Abstract Objectives Sexual health is a fundamental, but often overlooked component in the context of overall health and wellbeing. This article aims to examine the existing sexual medicine curriculum for undergraduate students at the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine in order to document what undergraduate students are taught about sexual medicine and identify eventual gaps. Methods We used the platform LOOOP, Learning Opportunities, Objectives and Outcomes platform, and the platform MOODLE, a catalog of courses made available to students and teachers, as the main source of our project data. We screened the medical curriculum in LOOOP to identify courses that may have a link with sexual medicine. The keywords used were {sex}, {sexual} and {sexuel}. To complete the screening, we hand-searched courses that were not selected in the LOOOP or MOODLE search. The screened courses were then reviewed to assess whether their content covered the sexual medicine themes outlined in the model European sexual medicine curriculum recommended by the European Sexual Medicine Network (ESMN) and were rated on whether the topics was covered sufficiently, briefly or missing. Results Out of 1224 courses taught in the undergraduate program, 59 courses were selected based on the inclusion criteria. 22 courses cover at least one of the sexual medicine themes sufficiently. 23 of 31 sexual medicine themes are sufficiently addressed in the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine curriculum. 2 additional themes are covered in optional courses, leaving 8 themes insufficiently addressed, which are: {psychological perspectives and theories}, {barriers and facilitators to lead a self-determined sexual life}, {medical illness and treatment impact of sexuality}, {digitalization, websites apps and serious games}, {digitalization, sexual diversity}, {CSB and paraphilia, contributing factors and risks}, {CBS and paraphilia, legal framework}. Conclusions The project highlighted gaps in sexual medicine in the current medical curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva. Establishing a sexual medicine curriculum as part of the undergraduate program could fill those gaps. It would be useful to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes before and after following such curriculum. Conflicts of Interest No conflict of interest.
