Food insecurity and dietary diversity among women living in Dzaleka refugee camp, Malawi

Food security and dietary diversity surveys were conducted with 300 women living in Dzaleka camp, Malawi. Data were collected using REDCap Mobile App and analyzed using Stata V15.1. Indicators were the UN FAO food insecurity score and household dietary diversity score. Analysis included descriptive statistics and regression models. The women had low educational attainment (50% primary) and low-income (annual income average - $300USD). Ninety-one percent of women had severe food insecurity and women only ate on average 2–3 food groups the previous day. The lack of food security and dietary diversity is a direct result of inadequate funding and international policies. International support must increase to keep women safe and thriving.
