A Brief History of Cognition in L2 Performance

A great deal of research has been set forth to better understand the specific effects of cognitive task complexity (CTC) on facets of L2 performance, most frequently complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of L2 production. Within the research domain, the effects of CTC on L2 performance have been examined primarily through the lens of two theoretical perspectives and their corresponding frameworks: the Limited Attentional Capacity Model—or LACM— and the Cognition Hypothesis—or CH. While the results of research within this domain have been inconclusive, and at times contradictory, they do suggest some effect of tack complexity features on oral L2 production and written L2 production. Missing, however, from research in the domain is descriptive research on the specific effects of task complexity on the mechanisms of L2 performance. Thus, this volume seeks to better illuminate the interface(s) of cognition and L2 performance, first examining the intersection of cognition in oral and written language production, then examining the intersection of cognition and learner affect—specifically learner engagement—and the opportunities presented by the use of technology.
