Strength Improvement of Peat by using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

Peat is a type of highly organic materials that is created from the leftovers of plants. The utilisation of cement stabilisation was prevalent in order to improve the performance of the soil, as peat has poor strength. A study was undertaken on hemic peat to characterise its qualities and determine the optimal cement dosage for stabilisation. This was achieved by conducting tests to assess its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. A comparison was conducted to determine the optimal strength of hemic peat following stabilisation by evaluating the cement dosage at 200, 300, and 400 kg/m3, with curing periods of 7 and 28 days. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) result H400 reached a peak value of 101 kPa following a 28-day curing period. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were utilised to evaluate the alterations in chemical composition and particle arrangement prior to and during cement treatment. The H400 sample exhibited reduced carbon content, increased calcium content, decreased silica content, and decreased aluminium content compared to H200 and H300. Thus, the efficacy of cement in enhancing the strength of peat for peat stabilisation has been demonstrated.
