Sexual health is essential to overall well-being. Sexual dysfunction is common, with significant barriers to diagnosis and treatment, including inadequate training for medical students. Female sexual medicine has been understudied in scientific literature, medical education, and research for years. However, 20% of women report sexual dysfunction, marked by pain during sex, issues with libido, orgasm, and arousal that cause distress and most diagnoses are made by primary care physicians and obstetrics/gynecologists, emphasizing the need for cross-specialty knowledge.1 The United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) step 1 plays a central role in shaping preclinical medical education as a near universal resource for medical students. Therefore, it is important to examine how female sexual medicine and genital anatomy are represented in First Aid for the USMLE step 1, the most widely used resource for step 1 preparation.2 This resource exposes medical students to key topics, regardless of their individual school’s curriculum. This analysis compares the resource’s inclusion of male versus female sexual medicine and aims to identify gaps which may improve future training in female sexual health.
