Recent Advances in Methods for Local Administration of Drugs around Dental Implants

Abstract The release of therapeutic agents directly at a dental implant site may offer low but effective doses of drugs compared to conventional methods. This study aimed to investigate recent advances in the methods for local drug and chemical delivery around endosseous implants. Three main methods for localized drug release around implants have frequently been described. The first and probably the most common method is based on coating or incorporating the implant surface with a drug agent. The second method involves preparing the implant surface with a porous structure, which works as a drug reservoir. The third method uses carrier materials for the drug agents around the implant. The therapeutic agents’ localized drug release into the bone-implant interface may provide several advantages over conventional administration and may ultimately lead to superior patient outcomes.
