The recreational benefits from nature
Résumé fourni par la source
The value of outdoor recreation is estimated using a multisite travel cost method. Based on survey data from 2017, adjusting for changes over time in the aggregate amount of visits, the development in the size and distribution of the population, and in the recreational areas, we estimate the annual value of recreational visits to forests and open nature areas in the period 1990–2020. The total annual value of outdoor recreation is estimated to be 12.3 billion DKK in 2019 (2023 prices), increasing to 15.2 billion DKK in 2020 due to a large increase in the usage during COVID-19. The value has been increasing during the period from 1990 to 2020, in part due to an increase in recreational areas, but mostly driven by an increase in average family income. The value of investment in new recreational areas has fluctuated over the period, being very low in the middle of the period. Most of the fluctuations were caused by changes in the social discount rate. There has been a slight increase in the investment value over time, with an estimate of around 6 billion DKK in 2020.
