Effectiveness of alumina/copper oxide nanocomposites in removing cadmium ions from aqueous solutions
Résumé fourni par la source
This work deals with the synthesis and application of aluminum oxide (γ-Al2O3) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) to remove Cd (II) ions from aqueous solution by an adsorption method. The process was studied using two types of adsorbents – γ-Al2O3 NPs and γ-Al2O3/CuO nanocomposite. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM) methods were used for characterization of the synthesized NPs. The effects of contact time, adsorbent concentration and Cd ions concentration on the removal efficiency were studied. The studies showed that the use of γ-Al2O3/CuO nanocomposite exhibited higher removal efficiency for Cd ions with lower adsorbent dose. The results of calculations of percentage removal of Cd ions from solution indicated that the maximum removal rate was achieved at 90 minutes duration when using 0.0232 g of γ-Al2O3 NPs, and between 30–90 minutes of contact time with 0.0116 g of γ-Al2O3/12%CuO composite, respectively. The adsorption data of Cd ions were best fitted by the Langmuir isotherm.
