Solar urticaria (SU) is a rare photodermatosis characterized by abnormal immune responses to specific wavelengths of solar radiation with release of histamine and other mediators from cutaneous mast cells. Clinically, it manifests within minutes of sun exposure, causing erythemal flares and wheals that persist for up to 24 h, as well as occasional angio-oedema. To date, few studies have characterized the SU phenotype in large disease cohorts. As part of a wider genetic investigation of SU, this descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken to characterize the clinical and photobiologic features of patients with SU in the UK.
