Unlocking Electric Completions Through Dedicated Subsea Interfaces

Abstract The objectives and scope of the proposed paper are to showcase the implementation of downhole electrical systems for intelligent well completion (IWC) and surface-controlled subsurface safety valves (SCSSV), in Petrobras' projects and to present the solutions developed to enable their use in subsea wells, considering current standards and limitations in subsea control systems. The overall approach of this paper involves discussing the scope, and challenges of implementing downhole electrical equipment in new Petrobras' subsea projects. It starts with the modifications made to the subsea and topside infrastructure, considering additional requirements and current limitations on power and communication to the wells. The solution developed for initial implementation of these technologies relies on the development of a dedicated subsea interface system, however future integration into the subsea control system might be an optimization opportunity. The solutions that are being implemented in Búzios, Atapu, and Sépia fields successfully enable the use of downhole electrical systems in the wells, planned to happen in 2025. The modifications made to the subsea and topside infrastructure, as well as the development of an independent subsea interface system, allow overcoming the challenging integration of new and low maturity technology in subsea wells, as well as avoiding current power and communication limitations. Therefore, the independent subsea interface allows faster field deployment of the new technologies, as well as facilitates learning incorporation and design improvements. The development of this new subsea interface indicates that further developments in standards, particularly API STD 17F, are necessary to support the electrification of downhole systems. That will ultimately reduce cost in future electric completions in subsea wells through integration.
