Identification of women's participation in the reproductive cycle, breeding and fattening of pigs

In Colombia, their participation remains limited, particularly in the pig industry, where they represent only 20% of the workforce. In the province of Caquetá, the development of the industry has benefited rural households, although the role of women is still undervalued as they are limited to performing and managing activities and do not take on leadership and management roles. Global pork production has grown significantly, reaching approximately 110 million tonnes, and demand is expected to increase. However, this growth brings challenges, including opening markets and producing sufficient high-quality meat. China leads consumption, accounting for 50%, while the US, Spain and Germany are the main exporters. Still, the industry faces health and environmental concerns, such as African swine fever. In rural areas, women play a vital role in pig production, although they face barriers in accessing resources and financing. The general objective of the research is to analyse the configuration of the role of rural women in pig production in the municipality of Valparaíso Caquetá. The method used was the application of an interview type tool which was applied to a woman pig producer. The results showed the great importance of women in backyard production and that they play a fundamental role in the production process.
