Activating Intersectionality in Research Interviews

Recent decades have seen a growing interest in the utility of intersectionality in social and population health science research. Intersectionality is a theoretical framework originating in Black feminist thought that posits individuals simultaneously occupy multiple overlapping subject positions that contribute to persistent inequities and differential access to social power. This move toward implementing intersectionality in research is evolving, and while the intersectionality framework rectifies shortcomings inherent in previous research approaches, this framework presents new challenges. In this chapter, we discuss challenges specifically related to activating intersectionality in qualitative interviewing, drawing on examples from our research with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse transgender and nonbinary young adults. We bring intersectionality research into conversation with active interviewing approaches to qualitative research design and data collection to work through possibilities for advancing qualitative intersectionality research.
