Covid-19 and Higher Education: Assessing the Challenges Faced by Students in India

The outbreak of COVID-19 has had a significant impact on education, causing an abrupt transition from the conventional method of in-person teaching to online learning. The unexpected nature of this transition has led to considerable challenges for both educational institutions and students. This study is an effort to highlight the various problems faced by students from higher education institutions in accessing online classes and other academic facilities. The study relies on primary data collected through a web-based survey of students enrolled in higher education institutions in India. The survey employed a snowball sampling technique and gathered responses from 470 students. A well-structured questionnaire with both close-ended and open-ended questions was used for the same. The findings reveal significant barriers such as poor internet connectivity, lack of access to electronic devices, financial constraints, and challenges in accessing library resources. Students also reported difficulties with online examinations, and disruptions to their mental wellbeing, with high levels of anxiety, frustration, and depression being prevalent. Despite these challenges, the study highlights the role of digital platforms like SWAYAM and the National Digital Library in supporting remote learning. By presenting descriptive data on the experiences of students during this unprecedented period, this research contributes valuable insights to address existing gaps in online education systems and prepare for future crises.
