The 35th Chinese National Antarctic Expedition (CHINARE) implemented the sounding observation program at Zhongshan Station during the austral summer of 2018-2019 (the Year of Prediction Plan Special Observing Period (YOPP SOP)). Base on both sounding data and automatic weather station (AWS) data, the study compared the conditions during the YOPP SOP with the long-term annual mean data from 1989 to 2015. There was a noticeable higher bias in wind speed, relative humidity, and temperature at Zhongshan Station during the YOPP SOP compared to the 26-year mean. A lower surface air pressure was observed at Zhongshan Station during the YOPP SOP. The mean height of the lapse-rate tropopause (LRT) at Zhongshan Station was determined to be 8,550 meters, with a corresponding temperature of −52.8 °C. The cold-point tropopause (CPT) was found to be at a higher altitude of 9,300 meters, with a corresponding temperature of −55.3 °C. At the top of the troposphere, the mean wind speed at the LRT was 18.9 m/s, and the mean wind speed at the CPT was slightly lower 16.9 m/s. The study shows that under various weather conditions, the vertical distribution of tropopause height and wind speed at Zhongshan Station during the YOPP SOP exhibited considerable variability. This underscores the importance of detailed meteorological observations in understanding the complex atmospheric processes in the Antarctic region.
