Electrical drives play an essential role in electromechanical energy conversion. Drive systems have a variety of applications, including home appliances and industries such as manufacturing processes, transportation, and wind energy fields. The main technology of a high-performance robust drive system is a high-efficiency motor and proper sensorless observer. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), according to their relative advantages, are commonly used for high-performance traction and robotic systems. PMSMs have the merits of a high power-to-weight ratio, high torque per ampere ratio, and high efficiency. PMSMs may be surface mounted (SM-PMSM) or interior type (IPMSM) according to the rotor design. IPMSMs are commonly used for traction systems due to their merits over SM-PMSMs, such as higher torque, robust design, higher efficiency, and a wider range of constant-power regions. The IPMMSM is operated under the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) operating mode for low and medium speeds and under the field weakening (FW) operating mode for the constant-power region. This paper reviews two drives based on field-oriented control (FOC) and finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) techniques for an IPMSM drive system and proposes and implements the IPMSM drive system based on FOC with a conventional PI controller under different operating modes.
