The impact of uric acid on the incidence of complications among patients with cardiovascular diseases in a retrospective cohort study

Objective: This study aimed to investigate any possible relationships between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and different outcomes in patients with heart problems who were hospitalized in the hospital or intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Retrospective cohort research was conducted with Prince Faisal bin Khalid Cardiac Center patients. Lab, pathology, and medical review records were used to gather data on every patient. Results: The study included 121 hypertensive patients, whose average age was 60.29 ± 13.92 years and 81% of the patients were men. The included population's initial mean SUA level was 6.29 ± 2 mg/dl. Longer hospital stays (r = 0.23, p-value = 0.015) and ICU admissions (r = 0.28, p-value = 0.004) were positively correlated with elevated SUA levels. Additionally, there were notable associations between SUA levels and indicators of renal function; positive correlations with urea (r = 0.63, p-value = 0.000) and creatinine (r = 0.52, p-value = 0.000) indicated that greater SUA levels were linked to a lower glomerular filtration rate. Conclusion: These results highlighted the need to keep an eye on SUA levels in patients with cardiovascular conditions and the necessity of additional studies to fully comprehend the function of SUA in forecasting cardiac issues and directing patient care tactics.
