Characteristics of natural rubber latex-modified asphalt: A short review
Le résumé fourni par la source
Abstract Asphalt has been widely used in the field of road pavement. However, increasing traffic volume and warm weather over a long period can increase asphalt damage and reduce the asphalt’s lifespan. Asphalt damage can be overcome using polymer-modified asphalt (PMA). The presence of polymer in PMA provides a better soft point than ordinary asphalt. One polymer that can be used is natural rubber latex (NRL). NRL can be dispersed at 150 °C or lower temperatures, requiring low-speed stirring and shorter stirring times. However, the composition of NRL needs to be considered when providing PMA. Excessive NRL composition can destroy the asphalt mixing process and produce low rheological characteristics. This article reviews previous investigations regarding the effect of NRL addition on asphalt characteristics, particularly on macrostructural properties such as viscosity, soft point, penetration, and ductility. The types of asphalt used include emulsion asphalt, penetration grade asphalt (AC60/70), and PEN grade bitumen (80/100). Based on a literature review, the optimum NRL composition that can be added to asphalt is 7%. However, adding other additives that form cross-links in asphalt can reduce this composition, such as polyphosphoric acid, sulphur, and surfactants such as silane.
