92 Views of hospice nurses on the role of the chaplain

Background Since the establishment of hospices, chaplains have played crucial roles in ensuring the holistic care and well-being of individuals in their care. While chaplaincy and spirituality are recognised as essential components of comprehensive care, there remain gaps in understanding their role. Nursing staff provide face-to-face emotional and psychological support, and may provide valuable insights into how chaplains support hospice patients. The aim of the study was to explore the perspectives of nurses on chaplains’ role. Methods This was a qualitative semi-structured interview study conducted at an independent hospice in the North of England. A total of eight nurses were interviewed in a private room on site. The interview schedule was informed by a literature review. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis using NVivo software. Braun and Clarke’s six-step reflexive thematic analysis process was used. Results Participants ranged in experience of hospice work from 2 to 20 years. Reflexive thematic analysis generated four key themes and fourteen subthemes. These were as follows: 1. The role of hospice chaplains in the eyes of nurses, which outlines how nurses feel chaplains support their patients. 2. Evidenced tasks, such as arranging/supporting important life events. 3. Obstacles chaplains face, such as a poor understanding of their role. 4. The effect of the chaplains on patients, families, carers and staff. Overall, nurses offered new insights into chaplains’ influence and role within the interdisciplinary team. Conclusions The findings describe a valued yet misunderstood position within the care team. Although chaplains engage in various supportive activities, misconceptions about specific duties exist, highlighting a need for better education on spirituality. Clearer definitions and expectations for chaplains may enhance their effectiveness. Ultimately, collaboration between chaplains and nurses shows the importance of understanding each other’s role.
