A Quick Overview of How Electric Vehicles are Rapidly Charged

This paper presents field research aimed at explaining how Level 3 (L3) rapid chargers work with different electric vehicles (EVs). Many studies treat EVs as having a fixed charging load, but real-world data shows that the amount of energy delivered depends on the vehicle’s state of charge (SOC), and not all EVs charge the same way. This becomes especially important for EV owners and route planners, who need to factor in both the time and cost of charging. For instance, charging rates often slow down as the battery fills, and in some places, like Costa Rica, EVs are charged by the minute. Most EV manufacturers give users only rough estimates for how long it will take to charge to a certain SOC at a specific power level. However, there is often little detailed information about the actual charging process, making it difficult to find this data in existing studies. To address this, our research aims to fill in these gaps by collecting real-world charging data. We gathered data from L3 charging stations, focusing on different EVs as they were being charged. One key challenge is that not all charging stations provide detailed information, and the data depends on the vehicles that use the station. In this study, we collected and analyzed data from three different EVs. The results showed clear differences in how these vehicles charge, highlighting the need for more data collection until manufacturers release this information more widely.
