[Evaluation of Perioperative Anxiety and Depression in Gastric Cancer Patients].

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the level of anxiety and depression of the patients, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is useful to evaluate symptoms such as dejection and uneasiness by asking patients to answer 14 questions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of psychological characteristics such as anxiety and depression using HADS after gastrectomy in gastric cancer(GC)patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 79 patients with GC who underwent gastrectomy and answered HADS questions between January 2017 and August 2023. HADS is a tool to measure the feeling of anxiety(HADS-A)and depression(HADS-D). Total-HADS=(HADS-A)+(HADS-D). We examined the changes of total-HADS, HADS-A and HADS-D preoperatively, and at 3 and 6 months after operation. RESULT: There were no significant changes in HADS-D. However, there were significant changes in HADS-A and total-HADS preoperatively and postoperatively. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Interestingly, anxiety points(HADS-A)tended to be improved after operation over time. Anxiety that the patients feel about operation might be resolved after undergoing it. Perioperative psychological evaluation and support therapy might lead to overall improvement in mental health in GC patients.
