Résumé fourni par la source

Microalgae-bacteria symbiotic systems (MBSS) have gained attention as a promising approach for wastewater treatment (WWT) and biomass production. This chapter explores the advantages, challenges, and future research directions of these systems in sustainable wastewater management. MBSS offer efficient nutrient removal capabilities by utilizing the symbiotic relationship between microalgae and bacteria. The microalgae uptake nutrients for growth, and bacteria assist in the breakdown of organic matter and conversion of nitrogenous compounds. This dual mechanism results in effective nutrient removal and reduces the eutrophication potential of treated effluent. Another advantage is the potential for biomass production and biofuel generation. Microalgae have high biomass productivity and lipid content, which can be converted into biofuels such as biodiesel and biogas. The symbiotic relationship with bacteria enhances biomass production and lipid accumulation, making MBSS viable for sustainable biofuel production. However, challenges exist, including the inhibition of microalgae and bacteria by contaminants present in wastewater. Genetic engineering and strain improvement can enhance their tolerance and resilience to contaminants. Additionally, scaling up MBSS from laboratory to commercial operations requires careful design and optimization. Future research should focus on genetic engineering and strain improvement to enhance tolerance, nutrient uptake, and biomass productivity. Integration with other treatment technologies, such as activated sludge and anaerobic digestion, should be explored to achieve synergistic effects. Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment are crucial for evaluating economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. Overall, MBSS hold great potential for sustainable WWT and biomass production. With further research and development, these systems can contribute to a more sustainable and circular approach to WWT, reducing environmental impact and providing valuable resources for various applications.
