Enhancing noise suppression and signal detection in Fourier transform spectrograph using lock-in amplifier

This study investigates the impact of reference frequency on the performance of a Fourier Transform Spectrograph (FTS) when paired with a lock-in amplifier for low-flux light detection. A supercontinuum light source was used as the input, and the reference frequency was varied from 1.950 MHz to 4.875 MHz. The lock-in amplifier's ability to enhance signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and fringe visibility was evaluated. The results demonstrate that increasing the reference frequency significantly improves both SNR and fringe visibility, with the most substantial gains observed in SNR. Higher frequencies enabled the lock-in amplifier to better suppress noise, particularly 1/f noise and other low-frequency disturbances, resulting in clearer interference signals. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing reference frequency in FTS applications, especially for low-light environments like astronomical observations. Future work will focus on implementing this system at the 0.7-meter telescope at the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand for real starlight measurements.
