This chapter presents the first critical and annotated edition of the Inventario d’herbe , a Vernacular-Latin materia medica glossary compiled around 1540–1543. This glossary was once in the possession of Florentine humanist Benedetto Varchi (1503–1565). The chapter starts with an exploration of the reception of Dioscorides’s De materia medica in Florence, especially focusing on the vernacular translations of the text from the early sixteenth century, and then places the Inventario within the context of Varchi’s botanical interests.
