Le résumé fourni par la source

An important aim of occupational therapy is to enable occupational engagement. Among other factors, whether people can engage in occupation depends on self-management and self-efficacy. This is also the case for people with chronic conditions. In one of the first books about self-management, Lorig et al. wrote ‘it is impossible to have a chronic condition without being a self-manager’. This chapter will explain the related concepts of self-management and self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is related to beliefs and thoughts about one’s ability to take control, whereas self-management focuses on the behavior related to that ability to live well with a chronic condition. Efficacy beliefs influence how people think, feel, motivate themselves, and act, while effective self-management may increase efficacy beliefs. This chapter introduces self-management, its definitions, theoretical underpinnings, and its relation to self-efficacy. Then, research findings and further explanations are given to support and explain the use of the concepts. Finally, the concepts and applications are illustrated in a case illustration.
