John Dewey&s;s emphasis on democracy in the classroom today reappears as calls for more “critical thinking”. Because, as Brenda Almond puts it, what is at play in schools is the fundamental freedom to think. Like the 19th-century European thinkers, Dewey saw not only educationalists but society itself as having to choose between traditions that seek to preserve established ways and processes on the one hand and progressive strategies that focus on creating the greatest possible variety of shared interests on the other.
