Biodiversity serves as the foundation and vital support for all life that exists on our planet. A multitude of species and creatures collaborate within complex, interconnected ecosystems, resembling intricate webs, that maintain equilibrium and perpetuate the existence of life. Biodiversity is essential for ecosystem stability, ecosystem management, ecosystem services, food, medicine, cultural and aesthetic values, etc. Despite its importance, biodiversity is currently facing several challenges or threats from natural or anthropogenic activities. Each year, biodiversity experiences a decline with profound and disastrous effects. The key drivers contributing to this decline include deforestation, habitat loss, fragmentation, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change. Among these, invasive species emerge as a substantial danger to both plant and animal life within ecosystems. Invasive species have devastating effects on native biota, leading to the decline or extinction of native species and harming ecosystems. Invasive species establish themselves outside of their natural habitats and reproduce quickly, competing with native species for food, space, and water, and contributing to global biodiversity loss. Their disruptive capacity in natural ecosystems poses a significant and immediate threat to overall biodiversity. Invasive species cause demographic instability among tree species and perhaps diminish tree diversity by changing the forest structure. Invasive species pose a global threat to natural habitats, and it is imperative for proactive human intervention to be undertaken to prevent their incursion.A current challenge for biodiversity conservation is the control of invasive species in an effort to maintain species diversity. Managing and mitigating the impact of invasive species is crucial for preserving biodiversity. Additionally, international cooperation is often necessary to address the global movement of species and prevent the spread of invasives across borders. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the current and potential impacts of invasive species on biodiversity, and how they disrupt biodiversity or eradicate native species as a result.
