Knowledge and Perception of Liver Cancer in Rural and Peri-Urban Areas of Vehari District

Objectives: This study aims to empirically analyze the knowledge and perception of liver cancer in rural and peri-urban areas of Vehari district. It seeks to examine how various factors, such as knowledge about Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), age, education level (above matriculation), and efforts to improve health, influence awareness about liver cancer. Methods: The study employs SPSS to perform a comparative analysis of rural and peri-urban areas in the Vehari district. Binary logistic regression is used to estimate the relationship between the dependent variable—knowledge about liver cancer (measured as a categorical or binary variable)—and the explanatory variables, including knowledge about HCV and HBV, age, education level, and health improvement. Results: The findings reveal that age has a negative impact on knowledge about liver cancer, indicating that younger individuals are more likely to have greater awareness. Knowledge about HCV and HBV has a positive and significant influence on awareness of liver cancer. Additionally, while education above matriculation shows a positive trend, its impact on liver cancer knowledge is statistically insignificant. Conclusion: The study concludes that knowledge about HCV and HBV plays a critical role in enhancing awareness of liver cancer, while age negatively affects this awareness. The insignificant impact of higher education levels highlights the need for focused awareness campaigns to improve understanding of liver cancer in rural and peri-urban areas.
