The Role of Politics in Vector Control

It is through political leadership that changes can take place. Politicians need success in order to justify their decisions and the resources allocated to health and vector control. However, if control has been achieved, it becomes more difficult to justify the continued investment. This influences various philosophical and practical aspects of healthcare, particularly in the context of malaria and vector-borne diseases. We advocate for a holistic approach that addresses not only material poverty but also the poverty of satisfaction and dignity. Critiquing the reliance on GDP as a measure of well-being, we call for a shift towards valuing education, public debate and integrity. The discussion includes proposals for decentralized healthcare systems, such as health vouchers, to promote diversity and individual autonomy. Political decisions significantly influence disease control outcomes, as evidenced by the case of DDT reintroduction in The Gambia. Additionally, the unintended consequences of interventions, such as distributing low-quality impregnated mosquito nets in Tanzania, is described. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement, informed decision making and responsible communication to combat misinformation and promote social justice in the digital age.
