Mosquito Life Histories and Their Relevance for Control

In order for disease transmission to be sustained, sufficient numbers of vectors must occur in relatively close proximity to humans. The disease organism needs to be able to develop in the mosquito, and the mosquito needs to survive long enough for it to mature. Without an understanding of these factors, it is difficult to devise suitable strategies for their control. The concept of ecological niches is explored, highlighting species-specific adaptations and niche occupancy by different mosquito species. Even though many of the characteristics of their biology are shared (e.g. all mosquitoes have four larval stages when growth is possible, and all female mosquitoes are monogamous), there are wide differences in the biology of even closely related species. Urbanization’s impact on malaria transmission and the potential for species replacement are also discussed.
