In the previous chapter we discussed the description of particles and beams. In this chapter we describe how they are affected by the elements, for example, the magnets, in a beamline. An important task will be to adjust the magnets in order to satisfy constraints on the beam position, beam size, or angular divergence. These constraints often come from experiments that require either particularly small beam sizes or particularly parallel beams. This requires a thorough understanding of how the different components of an accelerator affect the beam and how to combine them in a way to satisfy the requirements.
