The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition is associated with variables of somatic protein depletion in surgical candidates

To investigate the association of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) with anthropometric parameters. We performed this study at the General Surgery ward of the Professor Alberto Antunes University Hospital, Federal University of Alagoas, Brazil. It was a single-center, cross-sectional study, with 109 patients undergoing surgical procedures. Sociodemographic, clinical, and nutritional data were collected, including anthropometric variables and the application of GLIM criteria for the classification and severity grading of malnutrition. Among the participants, 26.2% were diagnosed with malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria, where 39.3% were graded as having severe deficits. Significantly lower mean values of body mass index, arm circumference, arm muscle circumference, and corrected arm muscle area were found in patients identified with malnutrition (p<0.05). There was an association between the GLIM criteria and routinely used anthropometric parameters, particularly those related to somatic protein depletion. The applicability of the GLIM framework is highlighted as a quick, simple, and cost-effective tool for diagnosing malnutrition, as it is structured to identify impairments not only in conventional nutritional components but also in etiological criteria.
