Methodism in Milingimbi

This chapter examines the work of Methodist missionaries among the Aboriginal people of northeast Arnhem Land in the first half of the twentieth century. We focus on one of the earliest Methodist missions in this region, which came to be known as Milingimbi mission. Few locations or cultures could have been more different than Milingimbi from the eighteenth-century English context in the theology and practices of Methodism developed. The Methodists who came to Milingimbi had been influenced not only by this eighteenth-century tradition but also by its reinvention in the settler colonial context of nineteenth-century Australia and the experiences of Methodist missionaries and converts in the Pacific and beyond. During their time in Milingimbi, the missionaries’ practice was further transformed through their encounters with the Aboriginal people of this region, who are collectively known as the Yolηu. As we demonstrate, the Yolηu were not simply passive recipients of the missionaries or their teaching but engaged actively with the mission, influencing its development.
