The growth and development of crops are challenged constantly by a number of stresses throughout their life cycle. Insect pests, a key member of biotic stress factors, are of much concern to fruit crop producers as they pose major concerns related to a reduction in crop yield and quality. This necessitates the production of sufficient food to cater to the growing population demands. Insect pest resistance is of much concern in agricultural practices due to its associated benefits, such as reduction in production cost, improving crop yields, and ensuring food quality while avoiding soil and water contamination. As a result, further investigation could examine the genetic and molecular basis for insect pest resistance to gain a deeper comprehension and develop fruit crops to resist insect pests. Moreover, a detailed examination of the breeding strategies for diverse fruit crops in response to varied insect pests is crucial. This chapter focuses on the interaction between insect pests and fruit crops and how they respond to insect attacks via their morphological, biochemical, phytohormones, defensive proteins, and enzymes. We examined the breeding strategies involving conventional techniques (hybridization and mutation) and novel approaches via genomics in the identification of genes conferring resistance to major insect pests of fruit crops.
