The increasing problem of dyslipidemias in population: a retrospective study on the health condition of a cohort of blood donors

BACKGROUND: Cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes mellitus, lung diseases are comprehensively responsible for 74% of deaths worldwide. One of the most important actions to reduce deaths caused by and/or related to these pathologies is to control the modifiable factors of risk that favor their development. This could be possible through the early identification and treatment of the disease, but also of the related intermediate risk factors. Furthermore, it is essential to carry out efficient surveillance of these diseases in order to have the necessary information for their development, implementation and monitoring of policies, programs and interventions for prevention and control.METHODS: In this study, we report data relative to a retrospective study (four years, from January 2020 to December 2023) collecting some biochemical parameters of adult males and females from 18 to 65 years, who everyday come in the Santobono-Pausilipon Children Hospital (Naples, Italy) to donate blood. We report data collected in the last four years to have a glimpse into the general health status of adult blood donors.RESULTS: Interestingly, this analysis showed a reduction in the number of donors with high levels of total cholesterol but an increased number of donors with pathological low levels of HDL cholesterol.CONCLUSIONS: Monitoring the lipid asset is crucial in order to follow a correct life style and prevent cardio-cerebrovascular diseases.
