Rotator cuff tear: An evaluation of the top 20 papers produced in the past decade on both Altmetric and Bibliometric databases

Hypothesis & background: Bibliometric analysis uses citations as its main parameter when investigating research articles. The altmetric explorer have devised a scoring system, Altmertic Attention Score (AAS) to quantify the amount and type of attention an article receives online. This study seeks to compare lists of the top-20 altmetric vs bibliometric articles published within the last ten years with respect to rotator cuff tears. It is hypothesised that: 1) The top articles from The Web of Science (WOS) and AAS will be different; 2) each list will carry varying levels of evidence; 3) each list will have different Altmetric geographic and demographic breakdown. Methods: Two searches were performed for articles related to rotator cuff tears. 1) WOS database was searched to obtain a list of top 20 most cited studies relating to rotator cuff tears. 2) The altmetric explorer database was searched to obtain a list of the top 20 AAS articles relating to rotator cuff tear. Both lists were then analysed by applying altmetric criteria and bibliometric criteria. Results: AAS score on the altmetric list ranged from 941 to 118 (mean 393.2). There was no common studies between both lists. The highest AAS score on the bibliometric list was 105. The majority of online mentions were generated from the X platform (formerly Twitter). There were 71 studies involved in altmetric list in comparison to 36 on the bibliometric list. Citations ranged from 120 to 312 (mean 192.85) on the bibliometric list 0 to 149 (mean 47.45) on the altmetric list. There were 11 studies of level II evidence or higher on the altmetric list in comparison to four on the bibliometric list. Conclusion: The top 20 studies for both AAS and citations when limited to the past decade are not the same. The AAS scoring system contained studies which were published in journals with a lower IF highlighting its usefullness to discover literature published in journals with lower IF The altmetric list also identified greater number of high quality studies versus the bibliometric list. For rotator cuff tears, altmetrics may be superior to traditional bibliometrics at identifying high quality research.
