Exploring 5G/6G Energy-Efficiency in Mobile Communications for Sustainable Future

Worldwide deployment of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks achieves significant breakthroughs in terms of latency, data rates, mobility, and a massive number of connected devices as well as marks the beginning of a true digital society. Beyond 2030, the sixth-generation wireless communication network will integrate terrestrial, aerial, and maritime communications into a robust network which would be more reliable and fast and can support a massive number of devices with ultra-low latency requirements. Wireless networks have been mainly designed to optimize performance metrics such as data rate, throughput, and latency. In parallel, after intense research stimulated by operational, economic, and environmental considerations, energy efficiency (EE) has emerged as a key criterion in the design of mobile communications. In the first part of the chapter, we have discussed the growing need for EE in mobile networks. Network consumption models, KPIs, and related metrics as well as efficient power management are presented to evaluate new aspects of 5G-Advanced EE. The recent results of a development study on scenarios and requirements, energy-saving opportunities and potential solutions, standardized technical specifications of energy-saving features, and methods for performance evaluation are reviewed in the second part. In the third part of the chapter, we have analyzed recent trends in the field of mobile communications which indicated a paradigm shift from network efficiency to sustainable communication.
