Early detection of gastrointestinal cancer: opportunities for the development of endoscopic services in the Russian Federation

Oncological diseases remain a leading cause of mortality globally and in Russia. In 2022, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) cancers accounted for 17% of all malignancies in Russia. The late detection of GIT cancers is of particular concern, as it significantly reduces the chances of successful treatment. Enhancing endoscopic services can improve early diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Objective. To highlight opportunities for developing endoscopic services in the Russian Federation for the early detection of GIT cancers. Key points. This article explores the challenges in diagnosing and treating GIT cancers in Russia, reviewing trends in incidence and mortality. It emphasizes the critical role of early detection, highlighting the limitations in the capacity of endoscopic services, such as personnel shortages and resource constraints. The article references successful screening programs in countries like Japan and South Korea, where modern endoscopic techniques, including narrow-band imaging and artificial intelligence technologies, are utilized. Proposed measures for improving endoscopic services aim to enhance the detection of precancerous lesions and early-stage cancers. Conclusion. Early detection and screening for GIT cancers is a key public health goal in Russia. Modernizing endoscopic services, implementing advanced technologies, and raising public awareness can significantly reduce mortality from these diseases. Achieving these goals requires a comprehensive approach involving medical community and government support.
