Assessing tree-level lumber value in smallholder plantations in Ghana using the modified Taungya system

This study developed a framework for estimating lumber value at the tree level in smallholder plantations using the Modified Taungya System (MTS). The problem addressed is the lack of a reliable method for smallholder farmers and local communities to accurately assess the value of the trees planted, which is critical for improving their economic outcomes. The research, conducted in partnership between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG) and four local communities, evaluated timber from 47 different species managed by smallholder farmers, and these farmers receive 40% of the total revenue from successful sales. Twelve years after planting, the plantations were assessed for chainsaw and sawmill lumber values. The study identified 48 wood species at all sites, and the Olantan community showed the highest diversity of species. Sawmill lumber had a higher average tree value per hectare ($120,778/ha) compared to chainsaw lumber ($65,944/ha), with Terminalia ivorensis in Ahenkwa community having the highest sawmill value ($180,392/ha) and Albizia adianthifolia in Ntabene recording the lowest ($924/ha). A positive correlation between tree diameter and lumber value was found, although ecological zones influenced this relationship. Tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and merchantable height were the most effective predictors of lumber value, and sawmill industries showed a stronger correlation with tree value compared to chainsaw industries. These findings are important because they offer plantation developers and local communities a practical tool for evaluating and maximizing the value of their plantations, highlighting the role of species type, stand characteristics and management practices. By providing clear economic incentives, this framework could help enhance forest management and promote sustainable plantation practices among smallholder farmers.
