The Problem with the Placement of Space Infrastructures
Le résumé fourni par la source
This chapter investigates the ethics and politics surrounding the placement of space infrastructures, in particular launch sites, across the world. It takes as case study Europe&s;s spaceport in French Guiana and explores what Earth-based space infrastructures, and their impact on (local) communities, can reveal about the power dynamics between different stakeholders in the space industry. With a particular sensitivity towards the intersection of land rights and launch sites, and a focus on the (in)justices perpetuated by the industry, the author challenges common discourses that outer space exploration is designed to benefit all. The author takes her fieldwork in French Guiana as the main case study but includes examples from other contexts to showcase surprising similarities when it comes to the complex politics at the base of outer space exploration.
