Hashimoto thyroiditis is diagnosed by quantifying the serum levels of thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone. TSHR antibodies are markedly elevated in Graves disease while absent in the nodular diseases. With the launch of cancer immunotherapy and the emergence of related adverse events such as hypophysitis, investigators have used sera collected from cancer patients to identify target antigens in the tissue of interest. The vast majority of primary adrenal insufficiency cases are caused by Addison disease. The best-characterized antibodies in premature ovarian failure are polyclonal antibodies directed against steroid-producing cells. Besides germ cells, Sertoli cells and Leydig cells of the testes have also been investigated as targets of autoimmunity given their potential involvement in male infertility. Some reports have shown heterogeneity of immunoglobulin subclass antibodies to GAD65 in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients.
