The first step in the course-planning process is to establish your goals because—just as when starting on a long trip—once you know where you want to go, it is easier to plan a route that will get you there. Your course goals should also take into account the role each course plays in your department and on your campus. Once course goals have been established, your next task is to select learning materials, especially textbooks. As textbook costs and economic pressures have risen, many students find it difficult to purchase all the assigned materials in all their classes, and for them, the library is a vital link to their courses. Most colleges and universities require that students be given a course syllabus and most instructors provide one. The structural purpose of a syllabus is to present the organization of the course and help students understand how to succeed in it.
