The terms assessment and evaluation are often used interchangeably, even though they can have somewhat different meanings. Assessment in education refers to compiling information to help learners improve their performance; evaluation adds a layer of judgment about the quality of that performance. Tests and other evaluated assignments should be an integral part of the learning process, serving to deepen students’ understanding and improve their skills, not merely as the basis for giving grades. The most commonly employed option for evaluating student performance is the test and its briefer cousin, the quiz. A good multiple-choice exam can measure a variety of learning objectives, assess a wide range of student understanding, and increase the validity and reliability of evaluation processes. Writing assignments can help students improve their writing skills and help teachers to better evaluate their students’ knowledge of course material.
